Many parents have questions about nitrous oxide which is commonly called laughing gas.

Nitrous oxide is a very safe form of light sedation. It is inhaled and the effects start within a few seconds. It can be adjusted quickly and once turned off the effects are gone after only about 5 minutes allowing our patients to go back to their normal routine once they return home.

Nitrous oxide often makes many people feel happy and warm. Sometimes it causes some tingling in the child’s hands and feet and may make your child feel a little sleepy. While not always necessary, it is a wonderful tool to use in pediatric dentistry as it reduces the child’s anxiety and increases their patience during a dental procedure.

We often recommend that treatment of your child be completed while using nitrous oxide due to the child’s age, behavior, anxiety level, and treatment needs. Please do not hesitate to ask us any questions you may have about the necessity, effects, or safety of laughing gas.
